DEVELOPING THE SITE We enjoy the process of creating and managing own web site. The web is a fluid, colorful medium, and offers us a way to present ourselves and our work in a way which reflects who we are and what we do. It takes time, and it helps to have an eye for color and a willingness to pay attention to detail. But seeing the finished product pop up on the screen when browsing the web is a very nice reward for all the work.

The flowers at the top of each page are meaningful to us, for a couple of reasons. First, they offer a wonderful metaphor for the growth process that occurs with our clients. And second, most of the flowers you see at the top of each page are from our garden. The exception is beautiful lily which appears on several pages. It was taken by our friend Terry Boyer, of Lawrence, Kansas.

THE SOFTWARE The beauty of the web is that one doesn't have to be a genius to create a presence on it. We developed our first site many years ago on PCs using bare-bones web design programs and one of the HTML for Dummies books. It was a good way to begin, because we were forced to learn how to design and maintain a web site from the ground up. When we decided to re-do our site, however, we wanted to do more with with it without having to go deeply into sophisticated HTML coding.

AS ENTHUSIASTIC MAC USERS we were happy to discover Softpress, a company which offers the Freeway series of web design software for Macs, enabling one to create sites ranging from the very simple to the very complex. This site was created with Freeway Express v.5, which is very user friendly — one doesn't have to be a master of HTML code to create a nice site (although a working knowledge of it helps!). Page layout and design in this program has a similar feel to desktop publishing, and the program has a lot of clever bells and whistles. Its bigger sibling, Freeway Pro, has even more.

IF YOU NEED A WEB SITE but are not in a position to create one, we can help. Or, if you already know how to create a web site or are working with another developer, ask us about copy editing … because good web development and good writing are different skills, both of which are essential to the success of a web site. Just call or email us and we'll explore the possibilities.
