We first became aware of it while living on a beautiful, secluded rural property of 150 acres, called Blue Star Farm, which is located in northeastern Kansas. On the evening of May 18, 1994, at about 11:30 pm, Mary suddenly sat up just after we had gone to bed and looked out the bedroom door, which opens to a south-facing deck. She watched as a pulsating light, and about the size of a softball, floated across the yard from west to east, until it disappeared from her line of sight. When she told David, he immediately went out on the deck to see if it was still there. He saw a light matching Mary's description just a few yards away in the field just east of the house. Hovering six to eight feet above the ground and pulsating at regular intervals, it moved in a northerly direction, disappeared behind a large cedar tree, re-appeared briefly, and then was obscured from his view by the comer of the house.

Startled and somewhat confused by what we had just seen, we decided to go within to see if we could receive guidance on the nature of the phenomenon. We each received, independently, inner guidance to the effect that this was a "consciousness probe" of some sort which was either creating or marking an energy field. It may have been for purposes of some sort of activation, or for protection, or for some combination of these possibilities.

The next morning we dowsed the area where we had seen the blinking light. We were comfortable working with dowsing rods, and we thought we could use them to determine the pathway which the ball of light had traveled. Using L-shaped copper rods, we received clear indication of a rectangular shape approximately 90 yards long by 60 yards wide, with the house located near its center. Because of certain obstacles, such as fences, wooded areas, high grass, etc., we did not attempt to determine whether this rectangle was an isolated phenomenon or whether more was to be found beyond this perimeter.

We made some written notes about the experience, and then set the entire incident aside, as we did not know of anything else to do about it at that point. Six months passed, and then, for the first time since the incident, we decided to see if the rectangular shape was still in place. The dowsing rods indicated clearly that the boundaries were still there in approximately the same location, with one variation. On the morning after the incident, the rods had indicated that the boundary lines were about 6-10 feet wide. Now, on December 1, these lines were 20-25 feet wide. For those who are familiar with dowsing, the rods swung apart gradually as we moved across the lines, opened to 180 degrees approximately three quarters of the way through the boundary line, and then closed quickly the last 5 or 6 feet. The response of the rods was strong throughout, even when the wind kicked up.

We called a friend in Colorado who we thought might be able to shed some light on the situation, and her immediate recommendation was to contact friends of hers in Germany, Joachim Koch and Hans-Jürgen Kyborg. Most of their research in “unexplained phenomena” was at that time being conducted in England, particularly with the “Korn Kreise” (crop circles) and the area around Silbury Hill. We wrote to them and received an enthusiastic and supportive response. They encouraged us to continue to learn as much as we could about the energy field, using both inner and outer processes. They summed up their understanding of what was happening in these words: "You are in contact and it is intended to be so . . . What you have received on the evening of May 18, 1994, is something wonderful. It is a gift from the Higher Civilizations . . . a treasure to be guarded. We know that there is no need to behave in a different way while living in or with a grid. Act as you are used to, with all your emotions of every color. Even when you are sad or angry, go out and dowse and you will see the rods moving, as proof that communication with you is wanted as you really are — without any ritual or protocol — at every time of your day."

While we have continued to correspond with Joachim and Hans-Jürgen over the years, their letter was especially significant to us. Sometimes we go through periods of questioning, dry spells when these "higher civilizations" seem to be out of communication range — such was our experience at the time. Inspired by their letter, we examined the grid again in January, 1995, and what we found deepened the mystery. As we walked the property with the dowsing rods, we placed sticks in the ground where the rods opened and closed. To our great surprise the sticks lined up in a precisely defined grid, with a higher density of lines around the house, gradually moving farther apart as we reached the borders of the energy field.

We were excited at this discovery and quickly made notes and drawings. It seemed as if we were literally in the midst of something that was alive, some intermediary force which linked our own beings to something else in a strange and wonderful way which eluded our comprehension. In February, 1995, the mystery continued, for the rods showed that the grid had evolved into a seamless field of energy. When we asked the dowsing rods to show us the parameters of the energy field — the same question we had asked on each previous dowsing — the rods stayed wide open everywhere within the boundaries of the original grid. It was no faint impression that was registered by the rods. Pointing straight ahead when we began, they quickly swung open and refused to be affected by the wind or the unevenness of our walking.

This was the last dowsing that we did at Blue Star Farm. Having lived there for nearly a year and a half and loving every square inch of what to us had become sacred ground, it was time for us to follow the inner voice which had been calling us to the Pacific Northwest, where the story continued.

Although our ultimate destination was Ashland, Oregon, we landed for a temporary stay at a beautiful 320-acre retreat in Northern California called Alcyone Light Centre. The first morning that we were there, on a whim, we pulled out the dowsing rods and gave the directive, "Show us the parameters of the energy field that has been laid down on this property." The rods were motionless. Two days later we tried again, and to our delight the rods swung open and remained open for at least 100 feet in any direction from the house. It appeared that the grid had followed us! A month later we dowsed and found that the borders of the energy field had grown, and now extended several hundred yards in every direction from the house. Again, we were pleased — but what, really, was going on?

Six months after arriving at Alcyone, in the fall of 1995, we found a home in Ashland. Shortly after moving in we repeated the dowsing ritual and received similar results, with yet another twist. On the first day in our new home the energy field was nowhere to be found, but on the next day it was in place and affected the dowsing rods with the same intensity as the previous fields. We were intrigued by the fact that the boundaries of the field ended approximately 30 feet from the boundaries of our property. Upon checking two months later, those boundaries were still in place. It was as if the energy field was willing to grow as large as it could, but not to a size where it would encroach on the space occupied by others. This experience was repeated once again in the summer of 1998 when we moved to our present home outside Corvallis.

Our experience with the grid naturally gave rise to the question as to whether such energy fields existed around others’ homes. We assumed that they did, but the only way to know for sure was to walk around with dowsing rods in hand, which we did on several occasions. We found that these fields did exist and that they appeared to have a relationship to the consciousness and intent of those who occupy a given home. Where an energy field was indicated by the rods, in most cases it seemed to honor the boundaries of surrounding properties, as our original experience indicated.

A few weeks later we shared our experience with a friend in Ashland by the name of Suzanna, whose interest in matters such as this parallels our own. She invited us to dowse her own propertv with the dowsing rods, and, predictably, we found an energy field clearly delineated around her home. We decided to combine our intuitive skills with hers and seek more information, and came up with some answers which were quite satisfying.

Over time we have used three different ways to gain additional insight into what is happening: (1) inner guidance or revelation, (2) consultation with like-minded friends, and (3) use of a “tool”, such as the rods. In our session with Suzanna we relied primarily upon the third method, asking yes or no questions and watching how the rods responded. What was given seemed to be an elaboration on what was given by our friends in Germany and what we have received ourselves on the inner planes, namely that the energy field is a portal, a doorway of communication with higher aspects of Self. At one point Suzanna posed the question, "Does the energy field originate from . . .?" Several options were offered, such as "Angels," "Ascended Masters," "Spirit Guides," etc. The rods were fairly neutral to all of these, but they began to swing open when we inserted "extraterrestrials," and opened completely wide when we asked, "Does the energy field originate from our Divine Self?"

As we pursued this line of inquiry, it became clear that the energy field emanates from that part of our own being which is Divine and, indeed, “extra-terrestrial”; that is, that our true Self is a much vaster Being than the one we see in the mirror each day. The energy field is not something which requires action on our part; rather, it simply is. Having a force/purpose of its own — part of our being yet also beyond it — it is further energized by our acknowledgment and on-going awareness of its existence. That it can be detected with dowsing rods is a blessing to those who may doubt the existence of this greater Self within each of us, for such knowledge is actually the true goal of all of our strivings here in third-dimensional reality. That is to say, we are in physical embodiment in order to become more fully aware of ourselves as Divine Beings who, for a time, wear these "3D space suits," as Jose Arguelles so accurately describes our circumstance.

For many people, acknowledging and experiencing greater, non-physical aspects of themselves is an elusive endeavor. Perhaps some solid, earth-plane evidence, in the form of the energetic swinging of two twenty-five cent copper rods, is just what is needed in order to fully comprehend that we are not alone here on Planet Earth. The Divine is present, not in spite of us, not in someone else, but in and through each of us, as fully, as lovingly, and as powerfully as we are able to allow it to be.

It has been an enjoyable adventure for us to discover this grid and to observe its continuing development. We would be happy to continue this discussion with any who have had similar experiences or who are interested in deeper explorations.
